In 2003, a private Russian automobile company Derways was founded, one of the founders of which were the Derev brothers, entrepreneurs from Karachay-Cherkessia. In the same year, the production of the Derways Cowboy model began, built on the basis of the off-road vehicles of the Romanian company ARO. By 2004, production reached 5 thousand copies of this model. The light mid-size SUV received a design in the style of the legendary Mercedes-Benz G-Class SUV and a ZMZ power unit with a capacity of 128 horsepower.
However, in 2005, after the bankruptcy of the ARO company, the Derways company began to localize the models of the Chinese brands Lifan, Jili and Khaima. And the Lifan company is also becoming a technological partner of the Russian company. In 2006, production of the Cowboy model was resumed, which was modified using the Dadi Shuttle SUV platform. In the same year, the production of the second model of the company began, which was named Derways Land Crown, a localized version of the Xinkai SUV, a copy of the Toyota Land Cruiser 90.
In 2007, the production of a full cycle of current models of the Lifan brand will start, which brings production volumes up to 20 thousand copies of cars per year. And in 2009, production volumes increased to 25 thousand copies. In the same year, the production of cars of the Chinese company Haima, which is a joint venture of Chinese investors and the Japanese firm Mazda, started. The first model produced at the facilities of the Russian automaker was the Khaima 3, built on the basis of the Mazda 3. And in 2011 the production of Khaim 2 cars started. In addition, in 2011, a contract was signed with one of the largest Russian car dealers, the Avtomir company, which ensured a significant growth in sales of Derways products.
