Daihatsu automobile brand begins in 1951 in Japan. Hatsudoki Seizo, which was founded in 1907 and engaged in the production of motor vehicles and three-wheeled vehicles, was renamed Daihatsu Kogyo.
The new company continued to specialize in the production of three-wheeled cars and trucks, which were in great demand in post-war Japan. Among them, one can note the Midget brand microcar, which appeared in 1957.
The production of four-wheeled cars began only after Daihatsu fell under the financial care of Japan's largest Toyota Motor.
In 1974, the name Daihatsu Kogyo was changed to Daihatsu Motor, and already in 1975 the production of the first small-class Charmant model with engines with a working volume of 1.3-1.6 liters began on the basis of the Toyota Corolla brand.
In 1976, the first micro-model 550 or L55 with a front-wheel drive layout and a 4-door body appeared.
At the end of the same year, the Daihatsu Taft brand was shown - a simple and unpretentious car for bad roads in the style of American brands Ford and Willys of World War II. The following year, the premiere of the now-popular Daihatsu Charade of a particularly small class with a transverse-mounted 1-liter 3-cylinder engine rated at 52 hp was held.
A more advanced microcar of the Cuore brand was shown in 1980, and a bit later its all-wheel drive modification Daihatsu Mira appeared.
In the early 80s, the Japanese market showed an increase in demand for the so-called multi-purpose all-wheel drive cars, quite comfortable and suitable for driving on all types of roads, including dirt roads and snowy roads.
The all-wheel drive brand Daihatsu Taft, manufactured by the company, was closer to a military jeep than a normal passenger car in terms of performance and was in little demand. Therefore, the appearance in 1984 of a more comfortable brand Daihatsu Rocky was timely.
The new car had a frame chassis with a base length of 2205 or 2530 mm and accommodated from 4 to 8 passengers, depending on the type of body. The chassis with a switchable front drive axle was equipped with a 4- or 5-speed gearbox and a two-stage transfer case.
A 1998 cm3 gasoline 4-cylinder engine developed 86 or 91 hp, while a 2765 cm3 vortex-chamber diesel developed 73 or 91 hp. turbocharged.
The most comfortable brand Daihatsu Applause with a 1.6-liter engine with power from 91 to 120 hp was shown in 1989. In the same year appeared Charade with a 4-door sedan.
In 1993, the production of a new generation of Charade models was launched, equipped with engines with a working volume of 1.0-1.6 liters and a capacity of 52-125 hp.
Micro cars manufactured for the Japanese market are strictly limited in size. In the mid-90s, the length, width and height of such a machine did not exceed 3.3, respectively; 1.4 and 2.0 meters. In addition, the engine displacement should not exceed 660 cm3.
It is not surprising that with such a compact size, the useful capacity of micro models can only be increased by increasing the height of the body. At the same time, a fairly spacious landing of 4 people was achieved. A small cargo compartment has a volume of 225 dm3. On cars exported to Europe, the engine displacement increases from 659 to 847 cm3.
In the period 1996-1997, two more new models appeared.
This is a small YRV station wagon based on the Charade Gran Move brand with a 1.6-liter 90-hp engine. and one all-wheel drive Terios model with a five-door station wagon and a 1.3-liter engine with 83 hp.
In 1999, Daihatsu became part of Toyota Motor Corporation.
